Lakkundi, Gadag, Karnataka
2019
The students of batch 2018 were divided into 3 groups, each mentored by faculty who took the students to various villages. The group mentored by Prof. Anand Chalvadi and Asst. Prof. Pallavi Dhomse studied Lakkundi, a village in North Karnataka.
The village of Lakkundi was located in the district of Gadag and has a hot and dry climate. Through extensive documentation and observation, students were helped in deciphering the effect the climate had on how the settlement of Lakkundi developed. Students documented individual houses and the methods they were built to combat the extremes of temperature experienced in the village.
In order to expose the students to the full gambit of the village, the group was further divided into two groups and two specific parts of the village were documented extensively. The groups concentrated on the documentation of streets and public spaces within these parts. The students drew out kattes and public wells. Effort was given to decipher the materials that were used in the village and the mechanisms with which they were put together.
