Award of Excellence – INTACH Interdisciplinary Heritage Documentation 2024
The Rural Study Programme (RSP) documentation of Banavasi, undertaken by the III-semester B.Arch students of the Wadiyar Centre for Architecture (WCFA) under the guidance of Prof. Srinivas S.G., Assoc. Prof. Pallavi Dhomse Pawar, Research Assistants Vaishnavi K and Parikshit K., was honoured with the prestigious Award of Excellence at the INTACH Awards for Interdisciplinary Heritage Documentation 2024.
The award-winning documentation has subsequently been published in the IJHS – INTACH Journal of Heritage Studies, Volume 06, Issue 01 (April 2025), under the theme “Heritage and Communities”, recognising its contribution to advancing interdisciplinary approaches to architectural heritage documentation.
Centred on Banavasi, one of Karnataka’s oldest sacred settlements situated along the banks of the Varada River, the study investigates the dynamic relationship between built form, landscape, ecology, material culture, and community practices in shaping the identity of place. Through a multi-scalar documentation methodology encompassing the house, street, neighbourhood, and settlement, the project interprets vernacular architecture as an expression of cultural continuity, environmental responsiveness, and collective memory. The work underscores the importance of documenting indigenous knowledge systems and living heritage as vital resources for contemporary architectural discourse, conservation practice, and sustainable design education.
