Deciphering Urban Form of Indian Cities
Master Class by Ar. Pratyush Shankar on 22.09.2018

The lecture examined the morphology of Indian cities based on events, influences and generators across geographies and time. Using interesting mapping and diagramming techniques, Pratyush presented the cases of the single-nuclei medieval South-Indian temple towns, the Sultanate cities of the Deccan (The notion of the ‘necklace’ of fortification & the outside), Mughal cities (pleasure gardens & the fort), Colonial cities (British – functional & binary; Portuguese – church as a central unifier; French – Rational geometry & distribution). The questions that emerged include how does one differentiate between “city” & “urban” & whether there is such a thing as an “Indian City”?
